If you’re wondering what the cost of living is here in Mauritius, then here’s your answer. Let’s break this article into five sections: housing, transportation, health, education, and food. Hopefully this will give you a good idea of what things cost.

We should start by saying that the average salary here in Mauritius is 21 000 Mauritian rupees.

Of course, the cost of living in Mauritius varies from person to person. This is just a very general guide for you so that you know what to expect. Let’s start with housing.

HOUSING IN MAURITIUS

You can expect to pay anywhere from MUR 15,000 to MUR 40,000 for an apartment in Port Louis.

The majority of expats either live in Grand Bay or Flic en Flac or Tamarin in the west. Price ranges are wide as well. As low as MUR 18,000 will go all the way up to MUR 130,000 for the same apartment in the north.

You can expect to pay anywhere from MUR 18,000 to MUR 60,000 on the beach in the west, Flic en Flac and Tamarin. Generally, if you’re looking for a house in the west or the north with a garden, you’ll be looking at about 50 to 70 000 rupees for a family of four.

UTILITY BILLS

The next topic is utility bills. Let’s start with electricity. Generally, I’d say you’ll pay anywhere between 3000 and 6000 rupees for electricity a month, and that depends on whether it’s summer. In the summer, there will be air conditioning, and if you have a pool, you’ll need to run the pool pump.

I would estimate that water costs around 300 to 500 rupees a month on the island. Most people cook and heat their water with gas. I personally use gas to cook and solar panels to heat water, so a refill of my water bottle costs me less than 180 rupees.

For the internet, the main provider here is Mauritius Telecom.

They have some home internet packages ranging from 10 MBPS to 1 GBPS lines. Which will set you back 800 rupees to 5800 rupees per month. A 75-gigabyte data package for a cell phone is 315 rupees. A basic prepaid top-up package with someone like my.t is anything from 50 to 300 rupees.

If you want to get cable tv the two main providers are DSTV and Canal +. Premium on DSTV is 2800 rupees and canal + or something similar would be 2200 rupees.

TRANSPORTATION IN MAURITIUS

There are a lot of people in Mauritius who take the bus to get to work, and it costs 35 rupees for a one-way ticket or a thousand rupees for a monthly pass. Taxi fares in Mauritius are not fixed. Before the trip, you should negotiate a price with the taxi driver if you intend on taking one. Another option is to buy a car, but cars are very, very expensive. For example, a brand new Toyota Hilux double cab is over a million rupees and a Suzuki Alto is 360 000 rupees. You can also rent a car for around 15000 rupees per month. The current price of gasoline is 60 rupees per liter.

Buying a car also requires you to pay yearly insurance and road tax. This can be renewed every three, six, or twelve months.

If your vehicle has a larger engine, you will have to pay more towards your tax disc. Depending on your car, you might have to pay around 6000 rupees through to 25000 rupees per year with companies such as Quantum insurance.

HEALTH IN MAURITIUS

There are public hospitals, which are free for all residents here, as well as private hospitals, which are naturally more expensive. Private clinics are generally modern and get their equipment through private investments. Therefore, medical tourism has experienced a boom in Mauritius.

Government schools follow the British education system while private primary and secondary schools tend to follow the IB program or the French education system.

Some of the best-known private schools in the area are Le Bocage, West Coast, Clavis, Alexandra House, and Telfair. Regarding schools, it’s also important to know that there are two rates there’s an ex-pat rate and a local Mauritian rate, so you’ll normally have to pay a deposit or a registration fee and that fee will normally be higher if you’re an ex-pat. In most cases, registration fees are about 3000 rupees, while deposits can range anywhere from 25000 rupees to 65000 rupees.

MAURITIAN FOOD

Food is one of our major expenses. You’re going to need at least 10000 rupees per month for food for the average person. For a family of four, that’s 40 000 rupees. Here are just a few food prices in Mauritius to give you an idea. It’s purely just to give you an indication.

As a final touch, I’ll also add some extras, such as clothes. A pair of Levi’s costs about 3100 rupees. From 2000 to 5000 rupees for a pair of Nikes. A t-shirt costs 500 rupees.

DRINKS

A Phoenix beer is 75 rupees. and a cappuccino will set you back at least 100 rupees.

FITNESS
